Dylan deepened the kiss and lightly tugged on her bottom lip. Tears streaked his flushed cheeks as he smiled at her. “I’m so grateful I found you, baby. I heard you screaming. When I saw that bastard press a gun to your head, my heart nearly exploded. I thought I might lose you. I promise you, Erica, I will never control you as Phil did. You will always have the ability to choose. I just want to make you happy.”

She gripped his hand and brushed her lips across his calloused knuckles. “I know. You do make me happy. You took a bullet for me.” A sob constricted her throat, but she pushed it down.

A blast of noise rent the air. Fireworks filled the sky, visible in the alley from the narrow stretch of space between the buildings.

Erica loved the bright colors and designs but hardly cared about watching the spectacle. She dropped her gaze back to Dylan.

A grin spread across his face. “It’s been one wild Fourth of July. Why don’t we do something more low-key next year? How about no guns and crazy exes? Just us, the creek, and a bottle of wine. Clothing optional.”

She laughed softly, amazed he could make light of the situation. “That sounds perfect. Absolutely perfect.”

Okay, that sounds a little intriguing, and like one hell of a Fourth of July! Hello Ms. Daulton and welcome back to the Spotlight! You have been busy my friend! For those that might not know you, tell us a little about yourself?
I’m from North Carolina, my hubby Greg is from Indiana, and we have three adorable kitties. We live in NC, but most people think I’m from England or even France when they first meet me (and yes, I’ve been asked to speak French, which I don’t know). I have an accent, which sounds proper and smooth; a far contrast to how most people sound in my area. I’ve been getting the “Where are you from?” question since I was in elementary school, and kids can be quite cruel. Luckily, I’ve never really been bothered by the questions and funny looks. In fact, I take sounding different as a matter of pride.

As you should! Here’s one for you… What do you love that most people don’t like and wouldn’t understand why you do?
Okay, it’s a little weird. I love popping my knuckles. I know… some people are cringing right now while reading this, but the sharp pressure/relief in the joints relieves so much tension all over my body. I love the popping sound too.
That’s not so weird, my dad does that and it’s uniquely him. So, of course, I love it! Now, why did you choose Romantic Suspense, as a writer?
I love the versatility of the romance genre, and most books in this genre are more than simple love stories nowadays. All sorts of plot devices are used, such as: action, danger, mystery, emotional upheaval, and physical trauma, to name a few. If you take away the “falling in love” aspect from a romantic suspense, for example, then you have a suspense/action/thriller story. The romance genre is so widespread that I’ve heard of men reading and enjoying various books without realizing those books are classified as romance.
That’s really true and very refreshing! Is there a genre you’ve never written but would like to?
Crime fiction. If only I had an idea. Maybe someday.
Crime fiction is so intriguing to me and I think I just assume it will be too hard for me. I hope you do it! Here’s a harder one, if you could change something about one of your books already released, what would it be?
I’m learning more and more about editing and style all the time, so I’d like to revise a few of my stories. But I’m happy with all of them the way they are now.
I agree with the editing and style and want to do a new version of my first book. It’s so important, isn’t it? How about any new projects? What’s coming up for you?
I’m currently writing Harmony’s Embrace, the sequel to Lyrical Embrace, which follows Birley reuniting with his high school sweetheart. Birley is the brother to the hero in Lyrical. Hopefully, it’ll be published in early 2021.
Yay! That’s fantastic! I love the name Birley. How do you choose the names and characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?
I rarely create characters based on real people. The hardest thing for me is deciding on character names. Now, that might not sound like a big deal, but the names have to fit with the characters I see in my mind perfectly. I feel stumped and lose my creativity if I assign a name to someone that just doesn’t feel right. I usually choose the names based on their personality, physical characteristics, family dynamics/heritage, the time period of the novel, or just what I find sexy! I sometimes spend hours, if not days, just scouring through baby name books and websites for the best names.
Okay, give us some pearls of wisdom for aspiring writers?
For new authors, read modern books (as in what’s been published in the last five years). Publishing guidelines and styles change all the time, so you can stay updated on what’s acceptable by reading newer books.
Don’t put excessive demands, deadlines, and restrictions on yourself. Writing is difficult enough, and it’s only half of the work. I’m a plotter, not a panster, so I always recommend you plot out as much of the story as you can before you actually start writing it. By doing that, it’s easier to see plot holes, and you can avoid writing yourself into a corner later.
Handling rejections and bad reviews with finesse is a must, taking care of marketing and publicity demands is a handful but a requirement, and writing your next book while dealing with everything else is cause to bring out the vodka. But ‘tis the life of an author. You gotta love it, and I do with all my heart.
Just keep trying even when you’re feeling bad about yourself and the quality of your work. No one is perfect. Don’t rush a project; give it the love and attention it needs to be the best it can be. Both you as the writer, the book itself, and the readers deserve it.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Finally, do you have a favorite quote?
“A woman’s guess is much more accurate than a man’s certainty.”
I found the quote inside a fortune cookie—my favorite food is Chinese by the way—when I was a teenager.

We know you’ve got some steamy scene’s in this book. Are you willing to share?

Dylan grasped Erica’s hand, and they walked across the clearing to the creek.

Water sloshed gently along the bank, and mosquitoes flew above the rippling waves.

“Have you ever gone swimming here?” Erica smiled as she looked out over the water.

“Yup, lots of times when I was younger.” Dylan stroked a lock of her silky blonde hair between his fingers. “You want to swim?”

     “I don’t have a bathing suit.”

“You don’t need one. We’re all alone.” Excitement quickened his pulse as he stepped back and jerked off his dress shirt. He toed off his shoes, leaned down to pull off his socks, and dropped his slacks. Commando underneath, he kicked away the pants and stood buck-ass naked. Springy grass cushioned his feet, and he dug his toes into the soft dirt. His cock was hard and thick; the damn organ strained upright, apparently reaching for Erica.

Her breath seemed to hitch in her throat as she trailed her gaze down his body.

His brazenness probably shocked her but aroused her as well. “You going in fully clothed?” Challenge rang in his tone. Dylan wanted to kick his own ass for jumping a few steps too far and too fast into their budding relationship, but he wouldn’t back down now unless she told him to.

Erica licked her lips and yanked off her blouse, likely before she lost her nerve. She undressed just as quickly as Dylan did, but left on her lacy bra and panties. Then she clamped her arms around her chest and stomach as though suddenly self-conscious.

“Don’t do that.” Dylan gently gripped her arms and pulled them down to her sides.

Erica’s chest heaved as she breathed, and the creamy mounds of her breasts nearly swelled over the cups of her bra. Her hips flared wide, and her stomach dimpled with soft curves.

Dylan coughed to find his voice. Her long legs would likely walk a mile over his heart, but he hardly cared. “Don’t hide from me. You’re beautiful, Erica. Never forget that.”

Her eyelids lowered as she shuttered her gaze. “You don’t think I’m a little heavy?”

He cupped his hands on her hips and kneaded the smooth flesh. “Heavy? Hell no. You’re curvy, baby, and that’s a good thing. When I touch a woman, I don’t like feeling her ribcage or her pelvic bones through flat hips. Some girls starve themselves to look like anorexic fashion models, but I don’t find that look attractive.”

Erica blinked and stared back up at him.

“You’re beautiful, Erica. When I touch you, I feel strength. I’m not afraid I’ll hurt you. You’re healthy, too, and that’s the most important thing.”

“You are so different from what I’m used to.”

  1. Great interview! I think it’s great that you are so diversified in writing. Good luck on the books and audiobooks, Amber!

  2. Great post! I really enjoy learning more about fellow authors. You’re a fascinating person, Amber. I think we’d have fun if we met in person. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I love your advice for writers, Amber! Writers need t read! They should keep going, not pressure themselves too much, and not get too upset with rejections and bad review (hard to do, but necessary). Having been a journalist for so many years, I’d developed a thick skin. But I found it wasn’t nearly so thick when I started writing fiction! Best of luck with your book 🙂
