Darynda Jones

A little while ago my mom and sister recommended this series to me and I have to admit I wasn’t too sure about it. They said it was about this woman, Charley Davidson, who is a Grim Reaper yet also like an every day person/private investigator. People that have died, but don’t go immediately to heaven or hell, search her out. They go through her as a portal to the pearly gates OR want her help in solving their murder, to thwart the slayers of their mortality. But wait, they continued, she’s also in love with this really hot guy who is the son of Satan (he likes to show up in her shower) but he’s okay and really wants to destroy his dad.

Ummm, o…kay!

Then I started to read them and they are hysterical and fun. I’m someone who really loves most genre’s. My favorites are usually epic dramas with a little love and sex thrown in or really thought-provoking thrillers. However, sometimes super fun, easy reads are exactly what the doctor ordered and this fits the bill.

When my kids were little I would always get those tee shirts that had funny sayings on them like – I don’t have A.D.D., I just…oh look a chicken! She uses these at the beginning of every chapter and they make me laugh. She also takes a slightly darker subject manner and gives her heroine and other characters a fantastic sense of humor. This, of course, makes me burst out laughing at inopportune times, like the doctor’s office today! The only other person that’s got me to do that is Sophie Kinsella.

Though Kinsella will probably always be my reigning queen in this arena, with the Shopaholic books, among others, Darynda Jones might be a close second.

There are thirteen books in all, with the last one coming out a year from now but all the rest are available on Amazon.
