Land that I Love

I love Washington State

I’ve been asked three times in the last week why I choose to live in Washington state, with all the obvious turmoil that’s been going on here, and people leaving Seattle in droves. As you know I try not to post anything political on my blog or social media and won’t start now.

I was born in Washington and aside from a brief stint in Kansas, have never lived anywhere else. If you’ve never been here, I can understand the question. It’s a rain and “grunge” city, can be off-putting. However, if you have visited, you can see the answer to the question by looking past news headlines and seeing this small piece of the country for what it is… beautiful.

Nowhere in the United States do you have the allure of both the Puget Sound ocean and San Juan Islands and the sixty-four epic evergreen mountain ranges in such short proximity. The blues and greens of that alone rival anywhere else in the world (except maybe Scotland or Ireland). Yes, it rains and is gray and misty, but that too can be cleansing and beautiful. When the sun and mountains are out, and the diamonds of the sun shift across the water, this place is nothing short of magical.

It’s not that we have one thing that’s so amazing. It’s a collection rather of all kinds of wonderful things seen all across the country. Eagles, sea life, ocean, mountains, technology, medicine, farmland, vineyards, tulips, Chihuly, artistry, sports, music, small towns, and big towns. We have watersports in the summer, snow sports in the winter, and hiking all over. We border our great Canadian neighbors and I can’t wait for the border to open again and go for a visit.

I know it’s hard right now, but I sincerely hope you can switch off in these final days of summer, breathe in and grasp the beauty in everything around you. All the people, places, and things in your own backyard, and take them in with respect and admiration.
